More than three in five employees worldwide feel “vacation deprived” or don’t take enough time off, according to a new Expedia report.

The report, which surveyed more than 11,500 respondents across 11 markets, revealed that 62% feel deprived of vacation time.

According to the report, employees from European countries are the most likely to feel this way, especially those from Germany (84%) and France (69%).

Expedia noted that many French workers still feel deprived of vacation time despite taking the most vacation days among the markets included in the report.

“This is because an overwhelming majority of French workers believe that taking time off is a fundamental right and is crucial to public health and well-being,” the report says. “The distinctive French emphasis on the fundamental right to rest is something that should be embraced everywhere.”

Vacation deprivation feelings around the world

Japan had the lowest number of workers who felt deprived of vacation time, with just 53% feeling they didn’t get enough vacation time, according to the report. The low numbers come despite the low vacation utilization rate there, with employees using just 12 of their vacation days.

According to the report, Japanese workers are taking advantage of their federal holidays, as well as office and school closures, to make short, frequent trips that allow them to get away from routine without using up their paid leave.

Another country where workers don’t use all their vacation time is the United States, where employees use just 11 days of their annual leave. As a result, 65% of employees there say they are vacation-deprived, an 11-year high for Americans.

“There’s clearly a lot that the U.S. can benefit from, whether it’s spreading out your annual vacation throughout the year or prioritizing rest on your next vacation,” Melanie Fish, head of brand public relations at Expedia Group, said in a statement.

According to the report, Hong Kong is the only place where participants used all of their vacation days and more.

The report found that 15% of workers there plan to take an average of more leave than they are provided, with more than half feeling deprived of leave (57%).
