AXA XL has announced the appointment of Chris Caponigro (pictured above) as Head of Reinsurance Capital Management, where he will focus on expanding the company’s product offerings and expanding its investor base.

Caponigro will be responsible for developing the infrastructure and strategy for AXA XL’s alternative reinsurance capital and insurance-linked securities operations. He will report to Jay Van Heck, Head of Ceded Reinsurance, and will be based in the United States.

AXA XL has been active in the alternative capital market for over a decade, using its expertise to leverage external capital and intangible securities opportunities.

Van Heck noted that demand for ILS from external capital remains strong, and that the appointment of Caponigro is in line with AXA XL’s strategy to strengthen its ability to concede through alternative sources.

“We have an established and stable team in this area and our expertise and offering will be further enhanced by the appointment of Chris,” said Van Heck. “Chris brings a wealth of industry experience and his technical risk management capabilities and financial structuring skillset will be key to achieving our strategic objectives.”

With over 20 years of experience in the reinsurance and insurance industry, Caponigro’s expertise in technical risk and financial structuring will support the company’s strategic objectives. His previous roles include positions at Platinum Underwriters and Everest Re, as well as serving as Global Head of ILS at AXIS Capital, where he oversaw private sector investor relations.

In addition to this leadership change, AXA XL Insurance Americas appointed Kathleen Ziegler as Chief Operating Officer in July.

Ziegler’s new role will include overseeing day-to-day operations, including workplace management, underwriting, reporting, premium operations, and underwriting governance teams for the Americas region.

She will also lead transformation and technology initiatives to drive efficiency and innovation across the division. Ziegler succeeds Jerome Itte, who moves to a role within the AXA Group in Europe.
