Miller, the independent specialist reinsurance broker, has announced its expansion into the Japanese market, expanding its specialist offering to include non-marine insurance lines through its Japanese company, Lead Insurance Services Limited (Lead).

Tokinori Kono (pictured above) will join as head of non-offshore brokerage, strengthening Miller’s product capabilities in Japan. Kono previously served as Managing Director at I&T Risk Solutions (now Comos Risk Solutions) for seven years and spent four years at Aon.

The appointment follows the acquisition of Lead, which Miller says is consistent with its long-term plans to grow its business in Japan in terms of volume and product line. Miller acquired Lead in 2022 after a 25-year relationship.

Founded in 1994, Lead is a marine-focused broker specializing in hull, war risk, protection and indemnity insurance.

Ron White, President of Miller’s Asia Division, noted that Kono’s appointment supports their successful partnership with Lead and enhances growth opportunities in the Japanese market.

“Asia remains a cornerstone of our ambitious international goals, and we look forward to making further timely announcements as we continue to develop our presence in the region.”

Toru Suzuki, President of Lead, also expressed his enthusiasm for expanding their offering in Japan.

“Miller has provided us with a great place to realize our growth ambitions, and I look forward to working with Kono-san as we continue to provide the same high-quality advice for which we are known in a new area of the market,” Suzuki said. .

Last April, the reinsurance broker also strengthened its freight forwarding capabilities within the Asia Pacific region with the addition of Alberto Ferriolo, who has significant experience dealing with commodity clients across European and Asian markets. His background also includes sales and business development roles within a major Asian-owned commodities company and a global logistics company.
